Baby Baggage on Malaysia Airlines vs Singapore Airlines: Pay or Not (Plus Citilink, AirAsia, Scoot, Garuda, Batik Air) 2026

Published by SkyIndoFly Editorial Team — Last verified: May 2026

Infants 0-23 months travel as lap babies (in the parent’s lap) on Malaysia Airlines and Singapore Airlines at an infant fare of 10% of the adult fare plus taxes — roughly Rp 850,000–1,400,000 one-way KUL-SUB on MAS and Rp 1,100,000–1,800,000 one-way SIN-SUB on SQ as of May 2026 (Lebaran season adds ~30%). Booking a separate seat for the infant pushes you into child fare at 75% of the adult fare and you must bring your own car-seat. Stroller free check-in on MAS and SQ (registered at the counter; gate-side pickup possible if you request a stroller tag). Front-row bassinet is available on MAS and SQ for infants up to 11 kg, must be requested at booking. Parents’ carry-on stays at 1 piece each (7 kg on MAS, 7 kg on SQ Economy); formula milk and the diaper bag count separately as infant cabin baggage 5 kg on both.

Disclaimer. Customs and immigration rules can change. Check the latest at beacukai.go.id and the All Indonesia app before flying. For mixed WNI-WNA passport cases (e.g., dual-citizen kids under 17, foreign-spouse PR status), consult the KBRI/KJRI in your country of residence.

At a glance: infant fare, stroller, family-of-4 baggage math

Before the seven-airline comparison, four headline numbers Mama-Papa should anchor on:

  1. Lap baby infant fare (0-23 months). Full-service (MAS, SQ, Garuda, Batik) = 10% of adult fare plus taxes. LCC (Scoot) = flat SGD 50 (~Rp 600,000). AirAsia and Citilink = 10% or flat IDR depending on the bundle.
  2. Stroller. Free check-in on all seven carriers. Procedure differs: MAS, SQ, Garuda, Batik = gate-side stroller tag available; AirAsia and Citilink = counter check-in only, no gate-side tag.
  3. Bassinet (front-row seat with bassinet attachment). Available on MAS and SQ for infants up to 11 kg and 76 cm. Garuda yes on 777/A330, no on CRJ/ATR. Batik yes on A330 long-haul, no on 737. LCC (Scoot, AirAsia, Citilink) — not available.
  4. Family-of-4 baggage KUL-SUB on MAS. 4 × 30 kg = 120 kg total including the infant’s 10 kg allowance. Excess baggage on MAS ≈ MYR 50/kg (~Rp 175,000/kg as of May 2026).

Lap baby does not mean free — you still pay 10% of the adult fare on full-service plus airport tax at some airports. What is free is the seat itself (because there is no seat).

Note on reading the table. The “lap baby check-in allowance” column above is separate from Mama’s or Papa’s own baggage — it is the infant’s named allowance, attached to the parent’s PNR. Many diaspora families miscount here: the baby still has a 10 kg allowance on MAS/SQ/Garuda/Batik/Citilink even when in the parent’s lap. But on LCC (Scoot, AirAsia) — the baby’s baggage allowance is zero unless you buy a bundle.

Malaysia Airlines (MH): 10% infant fare + free stroller + on-request bassinet

Per malaysiaairlines.com (Conditions of Carriage + Infant Travel page), infants 0-23 months fly as lap babies at 10% of the adult Economy fare. May 2026 diaspora-route ranges:

  • KUL-CGK lap baby: Rp 650,000–900,000 one-way (10% of Rp 6.5-9 million adult Economy).
  • KUL-SUB lap baby: Rp 850,000–1,400,000 one-way (10% of Rp 8.5-14 million, Lebaran spike included).
  • KUL-DPS lap baby: Rp 800,000–1,100,000 one-way.

Key MAS specifics for Mama-Papa:

  1. Bassinet. Request at booking via Special Service Request on MAS site or call center +60 3 7843 3000. Available on A330, A350, 737 long-haul. Max 11 kg / 76 cm. Front-row Economy only.
  2. Stroller. Free check-in counter; request a “gate-check tag” so you can use it to the jetbridge.
  3. Infant carry-on. 1 piece up to 5 kg for diaper + formula, separate from parents’ carry-on. Bottled milk for in-flight consumption is exempt from the 100 ml liquid rule because it counts as “infant food.”
  4. Check-in baggage tagged to parent. 10 kg under the infant’s name attaches to the parent’s PNR. Family-of-4 Economy MAS = 30 + 30 + 30 + 10 = 100 kg — comfortable for Lebaran oleh-oleh. Excess at MYR 50/kg (~Rp 175,000/kg).
  5. Infant occupying a seat. Child fare 75% — around Rp 4.9-10.5 million KUL-SUB. Bring your own FAA/JAA-approved car-seat.
  6. Lebaran adjustment. Adult fare KUL-SUB in the 15 April–5 May 2026 window runs 30-50% above baseline. Lap baby 10% scales proportionally.

Singapore Airlines (SQ): 10% infant fare + free stroller + premium-economy bassinet

Per singaporeair.com (Travelling with Infants page), SQ follows the same 10%-of-adult-fare pattern as MAS with a few important differences:

  • SIN-CGK lap baby: Rp 800,000–1,100,000 one-way (10% of Rp 8-11 million adult Economy).
  • SIN-SUB lap baby: Rp 1,100,000–1,800,000 one-way (Lebaran + SUB premium pricing).
  • SIN-DPS lap baby: Rp 1,000,000–1,500,000 one-way.

SQ-specific details:

  1. Bassinet. Available on A330, A350, A380, 777. Request via Manage Booking — slots limited (4-6 per Economy cabin). Max 11 kg / 76 cm.
  2. Premium Economy bassinet. More slots because seats are wider. PE SIN-CGK adult fare Rp 11-14 million vs Economy Rp 8-11 million — about Rp 3 million extra per adult, or Rp 6 million for Mama+Papa together. Worth it on flights longer than 3 hours and for babies older than 6 months actively moving.
  3. Stroller. Free check-in counter + gate-side tag available. At SIN Changi T3 ground crew helps fold at the counter.
  4. Infant carry-on. 1 piece up to 5 kg, separate from parents’ carry-on (7 kg Economy / 10 kg PE and up).
  5. Check-in baggage tagged. Same as MAS — 100 kg total for family-of-4 Economy.
  6. Infant special meal. Infant meal (Gerber-style), toddler meal, child meal. Request 24 hours ahead. SQ also offers bottle warming in the galley.
  7. Infant occupying a seat. Child fare 75% — roughly Rp 6-8.25 million SIN-CGK. Bring your own CAAS/FAA-approved car-seat.

For Mama-Papa who are IDR-sensitive and willing to trade off comfort for savings:

Scoot (TR). Flat SGD 50 (~Rp 600,000) for lap baby — not a percentage. On short-haul SIN-CGK / SIN-SUB / SIN-DPS, SGD 50 is significantly cheaper than SQ’s 10%. Important note: no bassinet on Scoot — baby stays in lap for the entire flight. Stroller free check-in but counter only. No infant special meal — bring your own. Per flyscoot.com — verify before booking.

AirAsia (D7/AK/QZ). Infant fare runs either 10% or flat depending on the promo. No default free check-in baggage under the infant’s name — buy a bundle (Premium Flex / Value Pack). Stroller free check-in but counter only — you cannot use the stroller to the gate. No bassinet. Per airasia.com — bundle pricing varies week by week.

Citilink (QG). Garuda subsidiary. Lap baby 10% of adult fare, 10 kg tagged baggage (but default adult allowance only 20 kg Economy). Stroller free counter. Limited infant special meal. No bassinet (737-800 short-haul). Per citilink.co.id.

LCC trade-off. Routes under 2 hours (KUL-CGK, SIN-CGK): LCC saves a family of four Rp 2-4 million — worth it when the baby already sleeps in lap. Routes over 3 hours (KUL-SUB, SIN-SUB, KUL-DPS, SIN-DPS): full-service MAS/SQ more comfortable thanks to bassinet, special meal, and more generous infant carry-on rules.

Worked example: total trip cost math

Scenario 1 — Family of 4, KUL-SUB Lebaran 2026 on Malaysia Airlines

Assumptions: Mama (35) + Papa (37) + Toddler (4 years old, child fare 75%) + Baby (8 months, lap baby 10%). KUL-SUB Economy adult fare in the Lebaran window (15 April–5 May) baseline Rp 4.5 million one-way.

ItemCalculationIDR
Mama adultRp 4,500,000 × 1Rp 4,500,000
Papa adultRp 4,500,000 × 1Rp 4,500,000
Toddler child fare 75%Rp 4,500,000 × 0.75Rp 3,375,000
Baby lap baby 10%Rp 4,500,000 × 0.10Rp 450,000
Airport tax (4 pax adult+child)MYR 73 × 4 ≈ Rp 256,000Rp 256,000
One-way KUL-SUB LebaranRp 13,081,000
Round-trip (assumes symmetric pricing)× 2Rp 26,162,000

Note: baggage included (4 × 30 kg adult + 10 kg infant = 130 kg), stroller free, bassinet requested at booking. For extra baggage (Lebaran oleh-oleh + parcels), add MYR 50/kg (~Rp 175,000/kg). Total worked ~Rp 26.2 million RT for a family-of-4 KUL-SUB on MAS in Lebaran 2026.

If you shift to a non-Lebaran window (e.g., June-July around Idul Adha), adult fare drops to Rp 2.8-3.2 million one-way, family-of-4 RT total drops to ~Rp 16-18 million. The Rp 8-10 million swing is purely timing.

Scenario 2 — Family of 4, SIN-SUB Lebaran 2026 on Singapore Airlines

Same assumptions: Mama + Papa + Toddler 4 yr + Baby 8 mo. SIN-SUB Economy adult fare in Lebaran window baseline Rp 6 million one-way.

ItemCalculationIDR
Mama adultRp 6,000,000Rp 6,000,000
Papa adultRp 6,000,000Rp 6,000,000
Toddler child fare 75%Rp 6,000,000 × 0.75Rp 4,500,000
Baby lap baby 10%Rp 6,000,000 × 0.10Rp 600,000
Airport tax (Changi PSC + SUB tax)SGD 65 × 4 ≈ Rp 770,000Rp 770,000
One-way SIN-SUB LebaranRp 17,870,000
Round-trip symmetric× 2Rp 35,740,000

Compare against Scoot SIN-SUB Lebaran (Scoot adult fare Rp 3.5 million one-way, flat SGD 50 infant, full adult fare for child on LCC):

ItemIDR Scoot
Mama adultRp 3,500,000
Papa adultRp 3,500,000
Toddler (full seat, no LCC child discount)Rp 3,500,000
Baby flat SGD 50 (~Rp 600,000)Rp 600,000
Baggage bundle 20 kg × 3 pax (Scoot default is cabin only)Rp 600,000 × 3 = Rp 1,800,000
Airport tax 4 paxRp 770,000
One-way Scoot SIN-SUB LebaranRp 13,670,000
Round-tripRp 27,340,000

The gap: SQ Rp 35.7 million vs Scoot Rp 27.3 million = Rp 8.4 million for a family-of-4 RT. Trade-off: no bassinet, no infant carry-on, no special meal, and no 30 kg per-adult allowance. Worth it or not depends on baby’s age and your tolerance for a 3-hour flight with baby permanently in lap.

Mixed-passport family logistics

Many Cluster C diaspora households have Mama as WNI, Papa as WNA, and kids holding PR or dual-citizen status. Per imigrasi.go.id and UU Kewarganegaraan 12/2006 + 2025 revision:

  1. WNI child from mixed parents. Indonesian (red-white) passport until age 17, then must elect citizenship between 17-18 (declaration of intent before turning 21). For flight booking, the child’s passport must be valid 6 months ahead — check expiry before booking.
  2. Dual-passport child (Indonesian + host country). Exit Indonesia on Indonesian passport (avoid overstay flag), enter host country on host passport. Reverse for homecoming. Book the flight in the name on the passport of the departure country.
  3. Child with SG-PR or MY-PR status, parents both WNI. Child enters Singapore/Malaysia with SG-PR / MY-PR card; to enter Indonesia the child still uses the Indonesian passport (if Indonesian citizen) or host passport plus visit visa.
  4. Soetta immigration queue. Mama WNI + baby WNI queue Indonesia lane; Papa WNA in Foreign Passport lane. You can request a family lane at Soetta T3 — usually offered to families with infants or toddlers.

For more complex mixed-passport child cases, consult the KBRI/KJRI in your country of residence (KBRI KL, KBRI Singapura, KJRI Penang). Indonesian Immigration also runs a WhatsApp service for pre-departure questions.

Indonesia customs: oleh-oleh, Lebaran hampers, gift allowance

Per beacukai.go.id and PMK 203/2017 (updated by PMK 34/2025):

  • Personal allowance USD 500 per person. Family-of-4 pools to USD 2,000 (~Rp 31,500,000 at Rp 15,750/USD, May 2026). Babies and toddlers also get the full USD 500 allowance each.
  • Counts against the allowance: new goods (perfume, gadgets, watches, bags, unworn clothing), oleh-oleh hampers, gifts.
  • Exempt: personal effects already in use (worn clothes, used baby gear like stroller + breast pump), prescription medication, expressed breast milk in cooler bags.
  • Excess taxed 7.5-30%: gadgets ~17.5%, perfume ~30%, food hampers ~7.5%. Self-declare via the All Indonesia app before landing.
  • Mandatory since 1 October 2025 per Imigrasi press release.

Worked example: family-of-4 brings a new iPhone 16 Pro Max (~USD 1,200) + 10 kg Lebaran hampers (~USD 200) + perfume (~USD 150) = USD 1,550. Pooled allowance USD 2,000 — remaining USD 450 below threshold, no tax. With two iPhones (USD 2,400, total USD 2,750), excess USD 750 × 17.5% = USD 131 (~Rp 2,066,000), payable at the Bea Cukai counter in Soetta T3.

FAQ

Q: Can strollers be checked in free on MAS and SQ?

Yes — strollers are free to check in on Malaysia Airlines and Singapore Airlines, registered at the counter during check-in (not at the gate). If you request a gate-side stroller tag, you can use the stroller all the way to the jetbridge and pick it up at the aircraft door. SQ Changi T3 and MAS KLIA1 have ground crew who help fold the stroller at the counter. Stroller bags are also free.

Q: Are front-row bassinets available on MAS / SQ?

Available on MAS A330/A350/737 long-haul and SQ A330/A350/A380/777. Max baby weight 11 kg, max height 76 cm. Must be requested at booking via Manage Booking on the website or call center — slots are limited per cabin (typically 4-6 in SQ Economy, 3-5 on MAS). SQ Premium Economy has more bassinet slots because the seats are wider.

Q: What is the age limit for lap-baby fare on MAS, SQ, and LCC?

Lap baby (infant) = 0-23 months (or under 2 years old) on MAS and SQ. After 24 months (the 2nd birthday), the child must have their own seat at the 75% child fare on full-service. On LCC (Scoot, AirAsia, Citilink) — the same age definition (0-23 months), but pricing differs: Scoot flat SGD 50, AirAsia/Citilink either 10% or bundle.

Q: What is the difference between child fare on full-service vs LCC?

Full-service (MAS, SQ, Garuda, Batik) applies a 75% child fare for ages 2-11. LCC (Scoot, AirAsia) does not offer a child discount — kids 2-11 pay full adult fare. The gap is significant for families: KUL-SUB with a 4-year-old toddler saves Rp 1.1-1.4 million on MAS compared to adult fare; on AirAsia there is no saving.

Q: Can I bring formula milk in bottles in my carry-on?

Yes. Formula milk (ready-mixed liquid, expressed breast milk, or bottled milk for in-flight consumption) is exempt from the 100 ml liquid security rule because it falls under “infant food.” Bring enough for the flight duration plus a 2-3 hour buffer. Subject to manual security screening at Changi, KLIA, and Soetta — be ready for it to be opened and tested. Formula milk powder in sachets or cans is also allowed without limit.

Q: Does expressed breast milk in a cooler bag count as extra baggage?

No — expressed breast milk in a cooler bag does not count as extra baggage or parental carry-on. SQ, MAS, Garuda, and Batik recognize expressed milk as an “infant food / medical liquid” exempt from carry-on liquid rules. Bring freezer packs or ice gel to maintain temperature. For flights longer than 6 hours, request bottle warming in the galley.

Q: What if my baby is fussy on the SQ or MAS flight?

SQ and MAS crew are trained to help — bottle warming, on-the-spot infant meal requests, help folding the stroller for transit. Tips from our family: nurse or bottle-feed during takeoff and landing so the baby’s ears equalize; bring a pacifier; request a front-row bassinet; on SQ’s A380 there is a family washroom on the main deck.

Family experience: homecoming from Singapore with an 18-month-old

Our family flew home from Singapore to Surabaya with an 18-month-old and a 5-year-old toddler last Lebaran. We checked in at Changi T3 three hours before boarding (not the standard two), because SQ check-in for families with a baby took longer at the counter for stroller tagging and bassinet seat assignment. We took the stroller tag all the way to the gate, folded it at the jetbridge, and ground crew delivered it back at the aircraft door on arrival at SUB Juanda T2. The bassinet was already allocated because we requested it four weeks ahead. Baby slept two hours in the bassinet on the 3-hour flight — Mama could eat the SQ Economy dinner meal with hands free. The toddler got the SQ kids meal (chicken pasta + fruit), happy. Family-of-4 RT total: Rp 34 million — not cheap, but worth it for Lebaran timing. Soetta T3 immigration queue when transiting via CGK: family lane offered automatically because the officer saw the stroller — from 45 minutes regular to 10 in family lane.

Note from the Diaspora desk

Homecoming with a family is not just about the cheapest ticket. It is more about the stroller you can keep until the gate or not, the front-row bassinet confirmed before boarding, the Soetta immigration queue that moves faster with a family lane, the 100 kg of baggage that fits the Lebaran oleh-oleh without hitting the excess tax, and the baby’s rhythm that doesn’t break across a 3-hour flight. MAS and SQ offer similar family-service levels — the choice often comes down to the schedule that fits your kids’ school break and a bassinet slot still available. LCC options (Scoot, AirAsia, Citilink) can save up to Rp 8 million on a family-of-4 round trip, but with no bassinet and no special meal — worth it on flights under 3 hours and when the baby is comfortable sleeping in your lap.

Child fare, infant baggage, and customs rules can change — verify directly at malaysiaairlines.com, singaporeair.com, beacukai.go.id, and the All Indonesia app no more than two weeks before flying. We hope this guide helps Mama-Papa fly home a little more relaxed.
