Optimal booking for 6 diaspora corridors — KUL-CGK, KUL-SUB, SIN-CGK, SIN-SUB, HKG-CGK, TPE-CGK — is T-4 to T-6 months (September-November 2025) at 30-50% below peak fares. Before diving into per-corridor tables, four core numbers diaspora harus pegang dulu:

  3. Peak day return (leaving Indonesia). H+3 to H+7 = 25-29 March 2026 when cuti bersama ends. Return fares 40-60% above baseline.
  4. Optimal booking. T-4 to T-6 months (September-November 2025). If you missed it — T-2 weeks strategy for secondary corridors (KUL-SUB, SIN-SUB, TPE-CGK). T-1 week strategy for primary corridors (KUL-CGK, SIN-CGK, HKG-CGK) NOT recommended — fares will be 2-3x baseline.

Why these 6 corridors, not others

Indonesian diaspora is spread across dozens of countries, but the 6 corridors below capture ~85% of international Lebaran mudik volume per Kemenhub Angkutan Lebaran 2024 and 2025 data:

  • KUL-CGK + KUL-SUB. ~450,000 passengers per Lebaran window (Malaysia diaspora biggest — PMI + professionals + students).
  • SIN-CGK + SIN-SUB. ~320,000 passengers (Singapore diaspora — professionals + PR + students).
  • HKG-CGK. ~180,000 passengers (Hong Kong diaspora — mostly domestic-helper PMI).
  • TPE-CGK. ~210,000 passengers (Taiwan diaspora — factory PMI + ABK + caretaker).

Other corridors (Seoul ICN, Tokyo NRT/HND, Riyadh RUH, Doha DOH, Dubai DXB, Amsterdam AMS, etc) are significant in volume but the fare-curve shape is different — Lebaran-spike is more moderate at 15-25% because diaspora di sana lebih mature and many don’t go home annually. Peak day outbound: H-3 to H-1 (19, 20, 21 March). Morning slots (07:00-10:00 KUL) booked out first — parents/siblings di Jakarta can pick up before sahur/iftar at home.

Off-peak day hack: Tuesday H-5 to H-4 (17-18 March) = ~Rp 1.5-2 million cheaper than Friday-Saturday H-3 to H-2. Tuesday morning in week-of-Lebaran is usually the cheapest slot karena demand peak is on weekend.

Open-jaw routing trick. Book KUL-CGK outbound + SUB-KUL return (or vice versa) can save Rp 1-2 million per pax vs round-trip CGK only — kalau punya keluarga di East Java too. Use Aviasales “multi-city” search, not “round-trip”. Also consider KUL→DPS as a mudik option kalau keluarga di Bali — direct AirAsia/Batik 3 hours.

Baggage allowance for oleh-oleh. MAS Economy 30 kg per pax + 7 kg carry-on. AirAsia 20 kg default Economy (buy bundle for 30 kg = +MYR 60 ~Rp 210,000). Citilink 20 kg + 7 kg carry-on. Corridor 2 — KUL→SUB (Kuala Lumpur → Surabaya)

Main carriers: Malaysia Airlines (MH), AirAsia (AK/D7), Batik Air Malaysia (OD). Direct duration 2h 50m. Lebaran 2026 frequency: ~12 daily flights (rarer than KUL-CGK karena demand-base smaller — but Lebaran spike sharper).

Peak day outbound: H-2 to H-1 (20, 21 March) — Surabaya welcomes East Java + Madura + surrounding diaspora, many Malaysia PMI from Lamongan/Tuban/Bojonegoro/Madura. Dawn slots (05:00-07:00 KUL) booked first untuk arrival SUB Juanda at breakfast time.

Off-peak day hack: Wednesday-Thursday H-5 to H-6 (15-16 March) for cheapest window. Saturday H-2 (20 March) always most expensive — weekend + close to Lebaran.

Open-jaw trick. Book KUL-SUB outbound + CGK-KUL return can save 5-10% kalau keluarga di East Java but you work in Jakarta before flying back to KL. Or KUL-SUB outbound + SUB-KUL return with return date H+10 (1 April) — when fares already down to baseline +20% only, bukan peak +60%.

Baggage allowance. Same as KUL-CGK. Note: SUB Juanda T2 has faster customs queue than CGK T3 during Lebaran window — kalau bawa oleh-oleh banyak (approaching USD 500 personal allowance), consider entering via SUB.

Peak day outbound: H-2 (20 March). SUB demand spreads wider than CGK karena SIN-SUB flights less frequent — slots booked T-2 months out for H-3 to H-1.

Off-peak day hack: Monday-Tuesday H-7 (10-11 March) for minimum. Or Thursday H-1 night (21 March 21:00 SIN) = arrives SUB midnight — less convenient for family-with-baby but Rp 1.5-2 million cheaper than H-2 morning.

Open-jaw trick. SIN-SUB outbound + CGK-SIN return — useful kalau mau spend time di Jakarta before flying back. SQ has SIN-CGK 8 flights/day, jadi flexibility tinggi.

Baggage allowance. Same as SIN-CGK. SUB Juanda T2 international: customs more relaxed than CGK T3, queue normally 15-20 mins (vs 45 mins CGK T3 peak Lebaran).

Lebaran 2026 promos. Scoot Singapore-Surabaya annual February promo (T-1 month from Lebaran) often catches SGD 99 one-way (~Rp 1.2 million) — aggressive but limited seats. Per flyscoot.com.

Corridor 5 — HKG→CGK (Hong Kong → Jakarta)

Main carriers: Cathay Pacific (CX), Garuda Indonesia (GA), AirAsia (transit via KUL). Direct duration 4h 50m. Lebaran 2026 frequency: ~6 daily flights direct (Cathay 4 + Garuda 2), + transit options.

Peak day outbound: H-3 to H-2 (19, 20 March) — Hong Kong diaspora mostly domestic-helper PMI + ABK; Indonesia cuti bersama dates aren’t relevant for them (leave negotiated individually with employers), so peak day shifts to H-3 to H-2 window when families di kampung are ready.

Off-peak day hack: Monday-Wednesday H-7 to H-6 (9-11 March) for minimum. Or consider transit via KUL or SIN kalau Cathay direct is expensive — Cathay HKG-KUL + AirAsia KUL-CGK total can hit Rp 6-7 million vs Cathay direct Rp 12-14 million peak Lebaran. Trade-off: 9-10 hours total vs direct 5 hours, and risk of missed-connection kalau pakai 2 separate tickets (recommend 4-hour buffer minimum at KUL).

Baggage allowance. Cathay Economy 30 kg + 7 kg carry-on. Garuda 30 kg + 7 kg. Hong Kong PMI often bring parcels for family + electronics + gold (HK duty-free) — mind the USD 500 customs per person (full customs guide here). Excess Cathay HKD 200/kg (~Rp 400,000/kg) — pricey, avoid kalau bisa.

Peak day outbound: H-3 to H-1 (19, 20, 21 March). Taiwan diaspora is mostly factory PMI (Hsinchu, Taoyuan, Kaohsiung) + caretaker + ABK — contractual leave is usually pre-set di window Lebaran (BP2MI contract accommodates annual leave).

Reading note. Large spread on HKG-CGK karena Cathay yield-management aggressive on weekends. SIN-CGK large spread karena SQ + Scoot dual-class fare-band. KUL routes small spread because AirAsia aggressively maintains weekday-weekend fare-floor.

Practical strategy. Kalau jadwal kerja flexible, fly Tuesday H-5 or H-6 — baseline fare + time to settle in di kampung. Kalau wajib peak (cuti only H-1 to H+7), accept peak fare but book T-4 months ahead.


Open-jaw routing: when worth it, when not

Open-jaw = depart to city A, return from city B (not A). For diaspora dengan keluarga tersebar Jakarta + East Java + Bali, open-jaw can save Rp 1-3 million per pax sekaligus add flexibility.

Worth-it open-jaw configurations:

  1. KUL-CGK outbound + SUB-KUL return. Save Rp 1-2 million per pax vs CGK round-trip. Scenario: silaturahmi Jakarta H-5 to H+3, then train/bus to East Java H+3 to H+10, return from SUB.
  2. SIN-CGK outbound + DPS-SIN return. Save Rp 1.5-2.5 million per pax. Scenario: Lebaran di Jakarta H-3 to H+5, Bali holiday H+5 to H+12, return from DPS — Bali post-Lebaran (April) is lower-season pricing.
  3. HKG-CGK outbound + SUB-HKG return. Save Rp 1.5-2.2 million for PMI dengan keluarga East Java — enter via Jakarta, sungkem keluarga Jakarta H-3 to H+2, then train or Citilink to East Java, return from SUB.

Not-worth-it open-jaw:

  1. TPE-CGK outbound + CGK-TPE return. Open-jaw via SUB doesn’t save much because TPE-SUB direct is rarer and the fare isn’t significantly different from TPE-CGK. Stick to CGK round-trip.
  2. Family-with-baby open-jaw. Open-jaw means 2 segments to coordinate; family with stroller + bassinet + child fare prefer simplicity. Round-trip remains winner for family-of-4 with bayi.

Booking mechanism. Use Aviasales “multi-city” mode (bukan “round-trip”). Or search 2 separate one-ways and compare totals — sometimes 2 one-way LCC + 1 full-service segment hemat dari multi-city full-service. Risk: kalau ada segment cancel, Travelpayouts/Aviasales protection only covers affected segment, tidak rebook the others.


Baggage for oleh-oleh and personal allowance: don’t get hit by excess tax

The USD 500 per person per arrival customs rule (PMK 203/2017 updated by PMK 34/2025) applies to all diaspora entering Indonesia. For family-of-4 (including baby) = USD 2,000 = ~Rp 31,500,000 (May 2026 rate Rp 15,750/USD).

What counts toward allowance: new items (gadgets, perfume, watches, bags, unworn clothes), Lebaran hampers, kotak kue Lebaran, oleh-oleh for family, parcels.

What’s exempt: used personal effects (clothes, baby gear like stroller + breast pump), prescription meds, breast-milk in cooler bag, personal documents, used electronics (work laptop, primary phone).

Excess taxed 7.5-30% per category:

  • Electronics gadgets: ~17.5%
  • Perfume: ~30%
  • Food + drink hampers: ~7.5%
  • Bags + watches + jewelry: 15-25%

Trade-off: family-bundle pricing is usually non-refundable or has high refund fees (~30% of fare). For family-with-bayi where cancellation risk is high, evaluate whether saving 10% is worth a 30% cancellation risk.
